NUS Cares 2022

3rd September 2022

RC4 residents got a chance to volunteer with about 30 seniors from Orange Valley Senior Activity Centre on 3 September 2022. As part of the NUS Cares, the main aim of the event is to allow volunteers to interact and spend meaningful time with the seniors, helping them feel a sense of community while also improving their mental well-being.

Organised by RC4lunteers, one of the RC4's community service interest groups, the activities include sing-a-long session, buffet lunch and touring around RC4 building and UTown. Many seniors have commented that it is their first time to NUS and enjoyed the interaction with the volunteers.

It was very heartening to see that the elderly were super enthusiastic to interact with our volunteers and participated in all our activities with full of energy. Instead of visiting the centre, this time we invited them to have a tour around our University Town so that they would be able to enjoy their time outdoors and get to understand more about us. There were a few hiccups during the initial execution process, but we learnt to adapt quickly and most importantly we had lots of fun planning and volunteering together!

It was a great experience engaging and communicating with the elderly, and to my surprise, they were very eager to share their stories and were easy to communicate with! It's heartwarming to see their optimism and hopefulness.

Even though the event lasted only about 3 hours, some of the things they told us would stay with us forever. I recall an elderly praising the idea of campus living, due to the convenience and opportunity to live independently. She said that she gave her child the freedom to make their own decisions as it is crucial to raising them to be responsible, mature, and independent adults. We rarely engage in such conversations with our peers, so such experiences are really valuable.

We hope they enjoyed themselves as much as we did. I encourage everyone reading this to also take part in meaningful volunteering events 🙂

It was a fun day as the elderly shared their life experiences with us. They were very pleasant and it is heartening to see them enjoying throughout the event. I think the highlight was the karaoke session where we got to join the elderly and sing along with the songs they enjoy.

I think such events are very meaningful and it is important to connect with the elderly as the experiences by them shared were invaluable and there is alot to learn from them.
