Farewell Formal Dinner 2024: Oscar’s Big Birthday Celebration

17th April 2024

On 17 April 2024, Residential College 4 staff, faculty, and residents, dressed in their best formal attire, gathered to celebrate the end of a fulfilling academic year with heartwarming speeches and captivating performances by the college's talented residents. The Farewell Formal Dinner for AY2023/24, themed “Oscar’s Big Birthday Celebration,” was organized by RC4’s dedicated House Committee and Resident Assistants.

The evening commenced with an opening address by Dr. Naviyn Prabhu Balakrishnan, Director of Student Life and Resident Fellow (House of Aquila). Dr. Naviyn announced that he would be stepping down as Resident Fellow after ten years in the role. He paid tribute to the unwavering dedication of Aquila and RC4 residents in building a supportive, inclusive, and vibrant student community. Despite stepping down as Resident Fellow, Dr. Naviyn will continue his role as Director of Student Life at RC4, looking forward to working with the students in this capacity.

The uplifting sentiment was echoed by Sharmila Selvam, President of the RC4 College Student Committee (CSC). In her speech, she highlighted the valuable friendships formed through her participation in CSC, Arts Night 2024, casual Monday coffee chats, night cycling, and study sessions at the college.

“The challenges we overcame made us stronger, the successes we celebrated uplifted us, and through it all, our bonds have only strengthened,” Sharmila reflected. “I hope that when you look back at these years, you will remember us as your second home that will always welcome you back.”

During the evening, Dr. Naviyn presented the RC4 Honour Roll award to the current batch of students. The RC4 Honour Roll is a prestigious recognition given to students who have made exceptional contributions to the college.

This award serves as a testament to the hard work, dedication, and positive impact students have made in shaping the RC4 community. By recognizing these contributions, the award encourages current students to strive for excellence and actively participate in engaging and building the community within RC4.

Guests were treated to a delicious dinner, which was enlivened by performances from RC4’s talented residents. The evening was a fitting celebration of the end of the academic year, highlighting the close-knit community and the remarkable achievements of RC4's residents.
