Since its inception, Arts Night has served as a platform for RC4’s vibrant arts community to showcase their talents. Once again, this year’s Arts Night, held on 16 February 2025 at Gateway Theatre, presented the creativity and craft of our residents who have prepared for months leading up to the day. Held on 16 February 2025 at Gateway Theatre.
This year’s theme, Flux, embodies the struggle to adapt, to search for stability, and the resilience to redefine who we are. Through a night of showcase of RC4’s very own Arts Interest Groups from theatre and music to dance and fashion, this year’s Arts Night explored the tension between chaos and transformation.
Opening the night, Theatre@RC4 delivered a play “Who’s Getting Fired?” set in a failing thrift store, captivating the audience with witty dialogue and chaos.
Integrated seamlessly into the play were performances including RC4 Musical Expression (RC4ME), which featured 6 bands that performed a dynamic mix of pop, indie, rock and R&B.
Our Orc4pella interest group showcased 2 acapella performances featuring medleys from The Greatest Showman and Put Your Records On respectively, where the harmonization of the singers filled up the theatre with an emotional and hopeful performance.
Perhaps an interest group most unique to RC4, FABRC4S — our fashion Interest Group — put up a runway featuring handcrafted outfits personally designed, sewed and modeled by our own residents. While the pieces were flaunted onstage by the models, one may not realise the amount of effort and thought put behind each piece. Kimberly Teo, chairperson of FABRC4S, reflected on the challenges she faced putting together the fashion runway, “I think the hardest part was the tight timeline. With the photoshoot in Week 4 and a Chinese New Year break in Week 3, we only had about 2 weeks to complete our outfits. I remember the night before the photoshoot all of us were at SR6 sewing away till 1am. Nevertheless, it was fun and worth it to see the final result.”
Last but not least, the night featured R4D, RC4’s dance Interest Group, which presented a lineup of contemporary and street jazz dance items, and even a solo act blending Indian dance with Michael Jackson’s signature moves. Martha, head of R4D, shared, “Arts Night was one of my first times choreographing, and on top of that, it was for a big item. One of the hardest parts was making a dance that was fun and engaging but also manageable, since we had some new dancers in the group. I had to find the right balance, and that took a lot of trial and error. The best part was definitely seeing everything come to life on the actual night. After all the rehearsals and adjustments, watching the team perform with full confidence and energy was incredibly rewarding. Seeing the audience enjoy it made all the hard work feel worth it.”
Without doubt, the production would not have been possible without the hard work of the committee in the past few months. Cadence, Assistant Stage Manager and part of the Productions Committee, reflected on her Arts Night Journey, “This is my third Arts Night, and I think I keep coming back and helping out because I really see the value in such a production. This is not just when you watch as an audience, but being in the committee, you get to learn a lot of things in a safe space. I think it's been heartwarming to see the committee grow, from people who haven't been backstage before, to capable stagehands that can troubleshoot on their own.”
As the curtains closed, this year’s edition of Arts Night had not only showcased artistic talent but also embodied the spirit of resilience in the face of chaos, and Arts Night remains a testament to RC4’s thriving arts scene.
“This journey also taught me a lot about myself. I’ve never been the strongest dancer, so taking on choreography was scary at first. But I realised that dance is really all about practice and pushing yourself,” shared Martha Yeo (Year 2, Head and Contemporary Dance Caption of R4D). “To me, Arts Night is a space to express ourselves and try new things. It’s a chance to perform without fear and just enjoy the moment with a supportive community.”
