In Memoriam: Professor John Martin Richardson Jr.
The RC4 community mourns the passing of Professor John Martin Richardson Jr, former Visiting Professor, Adjunct Professor and Resident Fellow at RC4, who passed away at the age of 87, on 21 February 2026 at 5am Singapore time in Safety Harbor, Florida, USA, surrounded by family.
Professor Richardson's contributions in the areas of research, teaching, public policy consulting and academic administration draw upon a diverse background that includes political science, anthropology, economics, and mathematics. From 2017 to 2018, he served as Adjunct Professor and Resident Fellow at RC4, contributing meaningfully to the college’s academic and residential life. He also held concurrent appointments at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and as a fellow at the Temasek Defence Systems Institute.

Prior to joining NUS, Professor Richardson taught at Case Western Reserve University and spent three decades at American University, where he became Professor Emeritus in 2012. His contributions were widely recognised, including the Society for Computer Simulation’s recognition as one of the “Twenty Most Effective Decision-Makers in the World” in 1982, the Balaton Group’s “Member of the Year” in 2012, and the System Dynamics Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013, among other awards for program development and service to the higher education community.
We remember Professor Richardson with deep gratitude; he will be greatly missed by his students and colleagues.
