22 October 2024

As Week 10 of the academic year rolled around on 22nd October 2024, RC4 hosted a much-needed, laid-back evening in celebration of Halloween, offering a welcomed break from the drudgery of the semester’s intensity. Titled “ORCA Game,” residents stepped into an extraordinary Squid Game-themed dinner, where attendees dressed as their favourite characters. As students filed into the dining hall in their themed outfits, the excitement was palpable.

Hannah Hernandez from Noctua, a Year 2 Life Sciences student, expressed her excitement: "We just had a random idea to dress up because we thought it would be fun," she shared, showcasing her apple costume alongside her friends in eye-catching, bright, and colourful fruit outfits. Residents from Ursa also embraced the Squid Game theme, wearing the iconic prisoner uniforms from the series. The creativity displayed among friends in groups was a testament to the strong community spirit of RC4 residents.

Unlike the life-or-death stakes in the show, this event was all about pure fun, good food, and a dash of friendly competition. The night kicked off with an exciting Kahoot game to entertain participants as they waited patiently for their food, followed by a "Best Dressed" segment. Sunny Wu, the House Head of Ursa, nominated Professor Sreeni, who gamely joined in the fun with his housemates. Laughter filled the air as students participated in lighthearted games, creating the perfect blend of spooky entertainment and camaraderie.

Soon after, students indulged in a delectable feast featuring roasted chicken, pasta, salmon, mushroom soup, and desserts. "The food was really delicious, and my friends and I thoroughly enjoyed it while watching the segments," said Gerald from Aquila, a Year 2 Business Analytics student from the School of Computing. Similar sentiments were echoed by other residents throughout the night.

One of the most anticipated segments of the evening was the live band performances. The talented group Black Sheep wowed the crowd with their rendition of "Wake Me Up When September Ends," showcasing impressive vocals and musicianship. The night briefly took on a celebratory mode as the band, Mars Bars, celebrated the birthday of RC4's Director of Student Life, Professor Naviyn, which coincidentally fell on the same day as the dinner. RC4ME's Convex Optimisation kept the energy high, with students cheering them on.

Whether our residents are avid lovers of Halloween, Squid Game, or simply love spending time with friends, events like this reflect the vibrant community and excitement that make every moment here unforgettable. More than just a dinner, this event gave future students a glimpse into the dynamic, close-knit environment at RC4 — where fun, friendship, and memories are made to last well beyond graduation.
