Peter Pang received his BSc in mathematics and physics from the University of Toronto and his PhD in mathematics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He joined the National University of Singapore (NUS) as a lecturer in 1988 and is currently associate professor of mathematics. He has also held visiting research positions at Brown University, University of Montreal, Michigan State University, University of Valencienne, University of Vienna, University of Toronto, and East China Normal University.
His research interests are in partial differential equations and geometric analysis. He has published more than 70 research articles in international refereed journals, including a highly cited “hot new paper” in the “Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh” in 2003. His publications have appeared in top journals such as “Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society”, “SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics” and “Transactions of the American Mathematical Society”.
He was President of the Singapore Mathematical Society from 2006 to 2009. He was also a member of the Developing Countries Strategy Group of the International Mathematical Union, a board member of the International Council of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and a council member of the Southeast Asian Mathematical Society.
Peter Pang was director of the NUS University Scholars Programme (USP) from 2003 to 2009. During his tenure, USP gained much international recognition, particularly in the area of global education. He was invited to speak at numerous international higher education conferences, and was also invited to contribute a chapter to the “Handbook of Practice and Research in Study Abroad”, published in 2009 by Routledge (New York and London) in association with the Association of American Colleges and Universities.
He then served as Assistant Vice President (University and Global Relations) of NUS from 2010 to 2014; Associate Provost (Student Life) from 2014 to 2016; and Dean of Students from 2017 to 2019.
He has also sat on the Steering Committee of the European Union Centre Singapore, the Advisory Committee of Youth Corps Singapore, and has served on the Board of Governors of the Singapore International Foundation since 2012.
In 2006, he received the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) from the President of the Republic of Singapore. He further received the Long Service Medal in 2016.
