Flag 2023

Flag 2023 is a project where RC4, as one of NUSSU’s Rag-And-Flag (RnF) 2023 participating bodies, helps to raise funds and conduct engagement sessions with our partner beneficiary, Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH). Hence, fundraising activities such as flower and merchandise sales were conducted progressively to consistently raise funds for our partner beneficiary.

Additionally, in order to engage our RC4 community and raise awareness for our partner beneficiary amongst our residents, we have conducted Cognitio Perspectives session and Dine In The Dark activity to allow residents to understand more about the visually impaired and to physically experience the difficulties that the visually impaired faces on a day-to-day basis.

After planning and executing various planned activity throughout the past 6 months, it has been rewarding and heartening to see participants/volunteers being more aware and understanding of our beneficiary. Moreover, the avid support by my main committee, as well as our knitted RC4 community have certainly led to the success of Flag 2023, achieving our initial project objectives of raising awareness of our beneficiary and raising funds to support for a great cause!

As VPD of Flag 2023, I had a very enriching journey planning Flag. I really enjoyed working with all my committee members to bring our events and merchandises ideas to life, as well as my interactions with SAVH staffs and members of public during Flag Day. This year, our committee collaborated with other RC4 projects, such as Arts Night and FOC to conduct fundraising and activities. Overall, I am very proud the efforts the Flag committee has put in to raise funds and awareness for our beneficiary.

The Perspectives session with SAVH was very educational as I was able to glean a glimpse of the experiences of the visually impaired. I was surprised to learn that many of them do have similar hobbies like photography, etc., which I had initially perceived as something that might be difficult for them to pick up. However, it was really an inspiration to learn how they worked around these obstacles and are involved in various sectors. This allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of their lives and how they overcame the challenges they faced.

I enjoyed participating in Flag Day a lot as it allowed me to get to know my fellow housemates better while contributing towards a good cause at the same time. Would highly recommend participating!

Throughout the Flag journey, I have gained a better understanding of our beneficiary, in terms of how visually handicapped individuals carry about their daily lives, as well as how SAVH works to provide the support that they need. Being able to raise the necessary funds for SAVH to provide better support for the visually handicapped has made this experience truly worthwhile.

Flag 2023 has been a truly remarkable event, characterised by collaborative efforts that have enabled us to raise a substantial amount of funds. Our dedication towards aiding our beneficiary, Singapore Association of Visually Handicapped (SAVH), has been unwavering. Witnessing the outpouring of support from individuals who purchased the t-shirts we designed is heartening. Despite encountering challenges such as time constraints and limited manpower, we successfully orchestrated a range of activities. These included Arts Night flower sale, a collaborative sale with FOC, and the Flag Carnival. It brings immense satisfaction to have collaborated with fellow colleagues in ensuring the triumph of this Flag initiative.

Flag Day was really meaningful and fun. Not only was I able to interact with members of the public who shared similar passion for contributing to society, but also forge friendships with other flaggers!

The Perspectives session definitely broadened my perspectives about the visually impaired community. Not only did I learn more about SAVH the organisation itself but also about the day-to-day challenges those who are visually impaired face. Despite those challenges, I learnt that many of SAVH ’s clients lead very independent lives which I find very commendable. I got to learn more about braille and how there is also a Mandarin version for braille too! I also found out that there are smartphone accessibility features that help to support those who are visually impaired. It was very interesting to learn how society has tried to be more inclusive towards those with visual impairment and what more could be done to include them further in our society.
